POSITION DESCRIPTION

VOLUNTEER ASSIGNMENT: State Health Insurance Assistance Program / Senior Medicare Patrol (SHIP/SMP) Counselor

REPORTS TO: Program Coordinator  

GOAL OF ASSIGNMENT: To educate Medicare beneficiaries about health insurances including Medicare and MaineCare through the SHIP/SMP program

JOB SUMMARY:

Counselors provide their services in person, by telephone or at locations such as senior centers, Medicare education events and libraries to name a few.  They help beneficiaries gain a better understanding of the insurance benefits they are entitled to, review options for insurance choices and advocate for them when appropriate.   SHIP/SMP counselors identify and report discrepancies in Medicare and MaineCare claims and other forms of errors, waste, fraud and abuse to the SHIP SMP Coordinator.  SHIP Certification Training provided. Must be able to pass the test yearly.

QUALIFICATIONS SOUGHT:

 Experience and Skill Requirements: The following requirements and skills are considered essential:

· Experience with Internet and email required.

· Experience with word processing, and database computer software programs preferred

· Experience doing telephone work preferred.

· Experience in public speaking preferred.

· Must have a valid driver's license and proof of vehicle insurance, along with reliable transportation.

TIME COMMITMENT:

 Estimated hours: 5 Hours / week
